Selecting the right tires

Tractor tires are designed and engineered to overcome the challenges of specific terrains, and using them in different locations will give you a different tire performance. When looking to buy a new tractor, tires can easily be overlooked. Because of their enormous size and carefully welded parts, replacing a set of tires is a time consuming and costly exercise that can be avoided by ensuring your new tractor comes with the correct type.

Additionally, selecting the proper type of tires based on your operations can help optimize the performance of your tractor by providing proper traction, improving the ride quality and fuel efficiency.

To learn more about choosing the proper type of tires for your required use, it helps to understand how a tire is made. These individual parts define how a tire performs on the field, turf, or construction sites.

Anatomy of a tire

A tractor tire is a complex combination of fibers, metals, and rubber. At its core, all tractor tires are built with a casing made up of steel wires covered in brass and synthetic textile cords plaited together.

The orientation of how these cords are layered together determines whether they are radial or bias-ply. Tractor tires are typically radial tires, which means the cords and steel wires are organized perpendicularly to the running direction, which allows for better shock absorption.

Above the casing are additional layers placed diagonally called stability plies. This layer provides directional stability and protects the casing from external damage. Joining the tire structure with the wheel rim are metal rings called tire beads.

Protecting the casing and the plies from any external damages are the sidewalls made from rubber. These sidewalls provide flexibility and lateral stability to the tire structure.

Finally, the treads are thick, vulcanized rubber on the outer surface of the tire. They are molded and designed to offer varying degrees of traction, depending on their depth, angle, and position.

The treads are what sets apart each type of tire from one another. They are designed to perform on specific conditions and terrains. For example, higher angle treads perform better on wet conditions and steep terrain, while lower angle treads suit drier surfaces.

Read on to learn the different types of tractor tires for each kind of terrain.

Types of tractor tires

  1. Agricultural tires
Also known as R-1 tires, agricultural or ag tires are built with deep, diagonal bar-lug treads commonly set between 23 and 45 degrees. These tires are ideal for soft surfaces, such as fields. In addition, Ag tires offer superb traction and reliable performance on rough, uneven, or steep terrain.
  2. Turf tires
Turf tires, or R-3 tires, are designed with treads in the shape of blocks or buttons and have more rubber than voids on their surface. This specific design allows the tire to seemingly float over the surface, not to tear up the turf or leave tracks behind. Aside from grassy surfaces, turf tires are also suitable for loose gravel and sandy terrain.
  3. Industrial tires
Tractors fresh from a dealership often come with a set of industrial tires. This type of tire features a bar-lug tread pattern, like agricultural tires, with a more shallow tread depth that allows them to move across a range of surfaces. Its rubber coating, made from heavier rubber grades, allows it to move across dense, abrasive surfaces easily. This type of tire is best suited for rugged terrains like concrete and asphalt.
  4. Large industrial tires
Large industrial tires are built with a semi-aggressive tread design that is more shallow and wider than agricultural tires and more pronounced than turf tires. Compared to industrial tires, large industrial tires are designed with wider treads to withstand heavier loads and are made from the highest grade of rubber for a more durable sidewall.

Now that you can identify the proper type of tires to use for specific applications, consider choosing OEM tires over aftermarket tires. Unlike aftermarket tires that are generic and manufactured to fit a range of tractor brands and models, OEM tires are specifically designed to fit your tractors and built to maximize your machine’s performance and efficiency on the field, turf, or construction site.
