How to maintain the T654's engine for a lifetime of service

Every tractor from TYM is designed to last a lifetime, and our Series 4 compact utility tractor is no exception. The TYM T654 boasts the performance of a utility tractor while maintaining the turning radius of a compact tractor. This compact utility tractor brings you the best of both worlds by offering both maximized power and maneuverability. With this benefit, however, comes accountability. To keep its premium Deutz TCD 2.9L4 Turbo engine running smoothly for many years, compact utility tractors like the TYM T654 require regular maintenance and care.

Simple routine checks on your diesel engine can amount to years of productivity with your TYM tractor. To ensure that your machine can continue its work for years to come, we have listed the major parts and components you need to monitor, adjust, repair, or replace on our website and on every operator’s manual. Here is a rundown of the checks you should perform on your TYM tractor engine components for a lifetime of service.

A closer look at the TYM T654 compact utility tractor’s diesel engine

The German-made Deutz TCD 2.9 L4 Turbo engine uses Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) to convert carbon and particles into less harmful emissions. This process eliminates the need for regeneration cycles, minimizing downtime as well as maintenance and repair needs. Diesel engines, like that of the TYM T654, have become the dominant power in agricultural machinery. They produce more torque at lower engine speeds thanks to combustion ignition. Diesel engines also produce less wasted heat, so they are able to tow heavy loads and operate for longer periods of time without causing damage to the moving parts of the engine. But power, efficiency, and longevity require regular maintenance, which can be as simple as a routine check before starting the engine.

Check and change the engine oil regularly
The engine oil is one of the most important components of your tractor because it acts as a lubricant between moving parts, which reduces friction and heat. Without this oil, your engine would overheat and become damaged. It is important to determine the engine oil level regularly by pulling out the dipstick and wiping it clean to remove residual oil. Once it is clean, insert it and take it out again. Check if the mark falls between the minimum and maximum line, and if necessary, add more oil.

We recommend changing the engine oil for every 100 hours of usage. To change your oil, remove the drain plug and drain the oil thoroughly, especially if your replacement oil is different from the one that is currently in use. Tighten the drain plug back into place and use the filler hole to carefully add engine oil to the recommended level.

Inspect and maintain the engine’s radiator

The radiator keeps a tractor cool by transferring heat from the engine to the air. Diesel engines tend to run hotter than gas motors, so their radiators are subject to higher temperatures, which can lead to overheating. To avoid engine failure, proper cooling system maintenance is important to prevent overheating.

To inspect the radiator coolant, check that the coolant level in the reservoir is between the minimum and maximum levels and add coolant if it appears insufficient. If the coolant is a rusty color, drain the system completely and refill it with a suitable mixture of water and antifreeze or corrosion inhibitor.

Check and replace the fuel filters

Most diesel engines, including those found in TYM tractors, have two fuel filters: a primary fuel filter and a secondary pre-filter to prevent condensation in the tank from being absorbed into the fuel. Water particles in diesel can damage your engine, so help avoid them by checking the fuel filter daily, and replacing both filters every 600 hours of operation.

Roll up your sleeves for some good old-fashioned cleaning

One of the easiest things you can do to extend the longevity of your tractor is to simply clean the engine regularly. When dust and other particles build up an engine’s components, it shortens its lifespan and decreases fuel efficiency. Be sure to inspect the engine with more care during wet summers and harsh winters, as humidity and road salts can quickly corrode engine parts. Cleaning can come in many forms, but a small brush, moist sponge, and specialized degreaser are simple tools to help you reach nooks, wipe away buildup, and break down tough substances.
